Story of Arkaya Trust/Foundation

The spirit of Arkaya Foundation started over 15 years ago when Yogacharini Maitreyi would provide her services where needed, be it teaching yoga for the hearing impaired, or someone in need or going to facilitate peace programmes in areas of war or strife.

The slum in Sivarajapuram fell into her lap six years ago when she was invited by one of her students to meet one of her maids who lived there. She bonded with the children in that area and many interventions like cleaning up the space and taking the children on yearly trips has been done. Teaching the children about growing herbs, wheat grass, photography, painting, yoga ,singing and the arts is part of what Maitreyi's friends and students do. Positive role models and anchors are provided for the children. They feel loved and supported.

Maitreyi has a personal connection with the children and this fundraiser is inspired by one of the children who wanted more consistency in the volunteers. So far the foundation was financially supported by Maitreyi and another Human Resource consultant Mr Paul James. Maitreyi decided to create a separate structure for Arkaya Foundation. She will also be fundraising to help keep these activities ongoing and growing. The aim is also to employ high quality and consistent people who can interact with the children and make their vision a reality. The new web site will have stories of the children and their vision for their lives. The long term goal is to also provide support systems for the women and men in the community as well, many of who suffer from addictions and dysfunctionalites. This is the first fundraiser in Vancouver.

Stretch, Strengthen, Chant, Heal, Eat, Drum, Dance & Celebrate with you very soon! :-) ♥
